Food Donations Guidelines Now Available!
RecyclingWorks in Massachusetts is proud to announce that a new web page on Food Donation in Massachusettshas been released. The guidance found on this page is the culmination of a stakeholder engagement process that brought together the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection, Mass Department of Public Health, Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic, US EPA, local health agents, food donation organizations and companies donating surplus food to discuss issues around the donation of surplus food. Three meetings were held around Massachusetts: in Springfield on March 25, Worcester on April 9, and Boston on April 29. From these meetings consensus was built around strategies and steps that can be taken to safely and effectively donate surplus food to organizations that can distribute it to those in need.

The guidelines, housed on RecyclingWorks’ website, are intended to provide a knowledge base for businesses interested in setting up safe and effective food donation programs for surplus food. The guidelines are intended to be a living document, and will be updated over time as new information is made available. The guidelines are aimed at being as inclusive as possible. Any businesses interested in setting up a food donation program should contact their local health agents and health professionals.

If you have any questions on comments about the guidelines, feel free to contact the RecyclingWorks in Massachusetts program at 888-254-5525 orinfo@RecyclingWorksMA.com.

For further opportunity to discuss food donation with those in the organics recycling/composting industry, the upcoming BioCycle conference is devoting a day to this topic. The"Food For People, Food For Soil" workshop on Monday, October 19, will explore connecting edible food available with people who need it.
