C & S TO RECEIVE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD AT ANNUAL MEETING, KEYNOTE SPEAKER CARL SCHLICKER OF AHOLD
On Wednesday, November 2 after the Massachusetts Food Association’s 105th Annual Meeting, the Association will induct Mr. Jack Laurendeau of Stop & Shop into its Hall of Fame. Jack spent forty-three years with the Stop & Shop Company before retiring in 1989, and is mainly credited with steering the company ship that brought it to the “Super Store” concept.
Jack joined Stop & Shop in 1946 at the age of nineteen as a Grocery Clerk. Over the next seventeen years he held various positions with the company including Grocery Manager, Store Manager for nine different stores, Grocery Merchandiser, Store Opening Supervisor and Non-Foods Merchandiser.
In 1963 he joined Bradlees, one of the Stop & Shop Companies, and spent the next sixteen years in various management positions. His last position was Market Manager for the New England Region. When Stop & Shop announced plans in 1979 to enter the combination food and super drug store business, Jack rejoined Stop & Shop, and was appointed to the newly created position of Vice President and General Manager, Combination Stores, reporting directly to the CEO of the Stop & Shop Companies, Mr. Avram Goldberg. At this point in his career he had spent 33 years with the company.
Also being honored that day will be the C & S Wholesale Grocers Company as the recipient of MFA’s Community Service Award. C & S, a family owned and operated company since 1918, the nation’s largest wholesale grocery supply company, is being honored for its endeavors to end hunger and its involvement in the communities in which it serves. Of its many charitable ventures both locally and nationally, it supports the United Way and the Western MA Food Bank. Each year the company participates in a campaign to help the United Way that matches every dollar pledged by its employees. In 2009 - 2010, C & S raised more than $66,000 to benefit local United Way chapters. It also supports the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts in multiple ways. Their employees regularly volunteer in various capacities for the Food Bank, from serving on their Board of Directors to providing landscaping and snow removal. Each September they hold a workplace food drive and donate $1 for every pound of food collected for the Feeding America’s BackPack program for kids. In 2009 they collected 1,142 pounds of food to benefit the Western Food Bank. The Food Bank also received approximately 300 tons of nutritious food donated through C & S warehouses during 2009 - 2010. It also supports national and local non-profits, awards substantial major and mini grants, and encourages its employees to participate in community service activities.
Prior to the start of the Annual Meeting, our keynote speaker will be Mr. Carl Schlicker, the COO of Ahold USA and CEO of Ahold USA Retail. Please plan on joining us for this very special event.
