MA LAST STATE TO ALLOW RX DRUG DISCOUNTS

When Governor Patrick signed into law the state’s FY ’13 budget on July 8, it contained language that allows for the use of coupons, discounts, rebates or vouchers towards co-payments for those purchasing prescription medicines.  Prior to its enactment, Massachusetts was the final state to allow for the use of such price reductions on prescriptions.  A previous state law banned any rebate for health care purchasing.  The new law bans coupons for brand name drugs when generic versions are available.  The allowance for drug coupons expires July 1, 2015 unless the MA legislature renews or extends the legislation.
