42 BALLOT INITIATIVES FILED FOR 2024 MA ELECTION

On August 2, 42 proposed ballot questions were filed by the deadline for submission to appear on the November 5, 2024 state election day ballot, 38 laws that could be decided at the 2024 ballot and 4 Constitutional amendments that could be decided in the 2026 election.  Many questions appeared in differing versions, so there are not 42 entirely different proposals.  For example, there are nine differing petitions to establish a law that app-based drivers are not employees, eight on voter identification, five relative to the gas tax and two relative to the regulation and tax of natural psychedelics.  It is important to note that there was a question filed to increase the minimum wage for tipped workers, but no question was submitted to affect the state’s minimum wage law for non-tipped employees.  Click on the link above to review the entire list of petitions submitted.  Questions must now be certified by the Attorney General’s office by September 6 as having met constitutional requirements before they can be sent to the Secretary of State’s office for the printing of signature gathering papers, which would be two weeks later on September 20.  Signature gatherers will have from September 20 to November 22 to gather at least 74,574 signatures of registered voters in the next step to appear on next year’s ballot.  Click here and scroll to page six for a calendar of deadlines of the initiative petition process.
